Essuk, or according to its ancient name, Tadamakat,
was one of the first cities established in Tuareg country.
Founded in the 10th century, the city, today in ruins,
could be considered the birthplace of the Tuareg civilisation
of Mali as well as part of Niger. It is possible to
view the borders of the different parts of the town
in ruins, the cemetery and its headstones. The name
of the Berber resistance leader Koceyla is linked to
this site. Recently, visitors have unearthed pottery
containing antique gold jewelry.
